HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING AT RMC?
“Two years and five months”
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE COLOR?
IF YOU COULD CREATE A BRAND NEW DRINK RIGHT NOW, WHAT WOULD YOU NAME IT?
"It would be some kind of coffee stout and I would call it the Dreadnaught. Something about a battleship and a coffee stout just goes together… and it would be an exclusively tapped drink only at the Round Mtn Coffee shop.’"
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RMC DRINK?
"Nitro Cold Brew or the v60 when it’s no longer Nitro season."
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE?
"Two come to mind, and they’re both from the movie Miracle… Both are from Coach Herb Brooks. First is when Patrick and Brooks are discussing the team Brooks picked out:
Patrick: “You're missing the best players.”
Herb Brooks: “I'm not looking for the best players, Craig, I'm lookin' for the right ones.”
The second is a more pivotal moment in the movie:
Herb Brooks: “When you pull on that jersey, you represent yourself and your teammates. And the name on the front is a hell of a lot more important than the one on the back! Get that through your head!”
WOW. Both of these have just stuck with me."
ONE THING YOU’VE LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF SINCE WORKING AT RMC?
"You definitely discover new things about yourself - one big thing I’ve learned is that the amount of effort you put into your work, that’s how much you get out. I’ve put so much into this job between learning more about roasting, the science behind coffee, etc - I wouldn’t have been able to learn so much without putting in the effort. And I’ve learned that I’m in control of that."
DO YOU HAVE ANY NICKNAMES WORKING AT RMC?
"Long hair dude? Haha but actually, not really. I’m called ‘the coffee guy’ by people outside of the shop, but I don’t really have a nickname inside the shop. To be acquired, I guess."
SO HEY, THAT’S A PRETTY COOL TATTOO…
"I actually get a lot of questions about my tattoo... The design takes one of my favorite movies of all time and puts together one of my favorite things to drink to combine it into the portafilter lightsaber. It represents two of my favorite things in this life, well."
WHAT COMPELLED YOU TO APPLY TO WORK AT RMC?
"My curiosity about coffee. Coffee just intrigued me and based on what I saw RMC doing as a company, they inspired me to apply and see what coffee was really all about. "
DESCRIBE ROUND MOUNTAIN IN 3 WORDS.
"Well-crafted, knowledgeable, loyal (to the community, the craft, and the team)."
IF YOU COULD BE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW, WHERE WOULD THAT BE?
"Japan, because it’s beautiful, the culture and history are very rich, and the 2020-2021 Olympics will be hosted there. So I would have to be there in the summer, but I would love to be there!"
WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES BEHIND THE BAR?
"One of my favorite memories, working at RMC, was my first cupping. I really love cuppings because that’s where we are really trying to dial in and produce a great cup of coffee. From setting up the trays to grinding the coffee, smelling, tasting… nothing like your first time cupping."
WHAT IS ONE CHARACTERISTIC OR HOBBY OF YOURS THAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT?
"My desire to go hunting - it was a one-time thing and now it’s growing as something I want to do often. I’m turning into a good ol’ boy tapping into my grassroots."
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU’VE ENJOYED SEEING RMC GROW IN IN YOUR TWO YEARS?
"Our roasting department, because that’s the backbone of our whole operation. The knowledge we’ve gained and continue to gain helps us provide a better bean that makes its way into your cup."
HOW HAS BECOMING ONE OF RMC’S ROASTERS MADE YOU A BETTER BARISTA?
"It’s helped me pay attention to how delicate coffee can be based on the variables put in place on that coffee. Examples, how hot water is, extraction, etc. Made me pay attention more to the steps it takes to produce a good cup of coffee. In roasting, you do really have to pay attention cause the slightest thing could change the bean and I’ve implemented that in how I extract espresso as well."
WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE RMC IN 5 YEARS?
"I would like to see us have at least one other location, an increase in our wholesale/roaster department, and a kitchen to craft a signature something that would pair well with our cafe/coffee."
ANY LAST MESSAGE TO RMC?
"You guys are great, you guys are loyal, here’s to another year serving you guys a good cup of coffee. May the force be with you."
